Wellesley Parish Church - Our History

Methil Parish Church was first built in lower Methil in 1837.

The building we know today on Wellesley road opened in January 1926.

In 2012, at the union of Methil Parish and Innerleven - which was located on Den Walk - we became

Wellesley Parish Church.

The blue boxes indicate new church buildings.

In 1794, former attenders at the Associate Presbytery church in Ceres established themselves as a congregation in their own right, Innerleven Associate.

Some decades later, in 1836, the Rev. John McLauchlan, Minister at East Wemyss church, established Methil Parish Church which was situated in lower Methil.

In 1847, following the creation of the United Presbyterian church, Innerleven Associate became Innerleven United Presbyterian Church.

Following the Disruption in 1843 and the formation of the Free Church of Scotland, the Free Church in Methil was planted in 1852 with their church building opening in 1890.

In 1900, the United Presbyterian church and the Free Church of Scotland united to become the United Free Church of Scotland. This meant that the Free church became Methil United Free Church and Innerleven United Presbyterian became Innerleven United Free Church.

A new building was opened in 1926 for Methil Parish Church on it's current site on Wellesley Road in Methil. We will soon celebrate the centenary of the building.

1929 saw the Union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free church. Innerleven United Free became simply known as Innerleven. The United Free church saw a change of name to Methil East and Methil became Methil West.

Innerleven and Methil East united in 1934 to become the congregation of Innerleven East. Their new church building, which is now a dance studio, opened in 1941 on Den Walk. Methil west simply became known as Methil again.

Wellesley Parish Church was formed in 2012 at the union of  Methil and Innerleven East churches retaining the building formerly known as Methil Parish Church.

The Wellesley Centre opened in 2022 creating a community hub for the parish and surrounding Levenmouth area.
